After Nancite Beach in the Parque Nacional Santa Rosa, the second most important turtle nesting site in Costa Rica is the Refugio Nacional Silvestre Vida Ostional on the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province. The Ostional Wildlife Refuge, as it is more commonly known, is a 200 meter beach strip bordered in the north by Punta India, and in the south by Playa Guiones & Playa Nosara. This refuge also extends three miles out to sea and includes the tiny village of Ostional. Not only does this refuge protect the millions of turtles that nest here every year, but it also looks after and safeguards the marine wildlife and birds in the area as well.
Encompassing the beaches of Playa Ostional, Playa Nosara, and Playa Guiones, the Ostional Wildlife Refuge protects the Olive Ridley sea turtles as well as the Leatherback and the Pacific Green sea turtles that come ashore in huge numbers every year to nest and lay their eggs during the months between July and December. This phenomenon, known as ‘arribadas’, takes place around 4 to 10 times during this period, lasting roughly between 3 to 10 days each.
It is thought that a significant portion of the world’s Pacific Olive Ridley sea turtles lay their eggs in the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. To date, the largest arribada recorded at the refuge occurred in November 1995, when an estimated 500,000 female sea turtles came on shore to nest.
Officially created in 1984, this refuge is also the only place in the world that allows people to harvest turtle eggs legally. This was done in order to prevent turtle egg poaching and to help the people of the Ostional village community. Under this project, the locals are allowed to collect and then sell a certain percent of turtle eggs from the initial three days of every arribada.
The town of Nosara sits on the western coast of the Nicoya Peninsula and has one of the prettiest beaches on Guanacaste’s Gold Coast. Often referred to as the gateway to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge

Después de Playa Nancite en el Parque Nacional Santa Rosa, el segundo sitio mas importante de anidaje de tortugas en Costa Rica, es el Refugio Nacional Silvestre Vida Ostional en la Península de Nicoya en la Provincia de Guanacaste. El Refugio de Vida Salvaje Ostonial como mas se conoce es una franja de 200 metros de playa bordeado en el norte por Punta India y en el sur por Punta Guiones Nosara, Este refugio también se extiende tres millas hacia el mar e incluye el pequeñísimo pueblo de Ostonial. Este refugio no solamente protege a millones de tortugas que anidan anualmente sino que también cuida y protege la vida marina salvaje y los pájaros del área.
Esta propiedad con exclusiva vista al oceano pacifico, con sus 19 hectareas de las cuales un 80% son una planicie, ideal para un desarrollo, todo con vista al mar de playa Punta India, con al rededor de 400 mts frente al mar, con un acceso privado a una hermosa playa.
Rodeado por Playa Ostonial, Playa Nosara y Playa Guiones, el Refugio Salvaje Ostonial protege a las tortugas marinas Olive Ridley lo mismo que las tortugas coraza acuerada y las tortugas Verdes del Pacifico que vienen a la playa en grandes cantidades todos los años a aparearse y poner sus huevos durante los meses de Julio y Diciembre. Este fenómeno conocido como “ambadas” ocurre de 4 a 10 veces durante este periodo y dura de 3 a 10 días cada uno.
Se piensa que un gran porcentaje de las Tortugas marinas del Pacifico Olive Ridley del mundo ponen sus huevos en el Refugio de Vida Salvaje Ostonial. A la fecha la ambada mas grande registrada en el refugio ocurrió en Noviembre de 1995, cuando un estimado de 500.000 tortugas marinas hembras llegaron a la playa a anidar.
Este refugio fue oficialmente creado en 1984 y es el único lugar del mundo donde se permite la recolección de los huevos de tortuga, legalmente. Esto se hizo para `prevenir el robo de los huevos y al mismo tiempo ayudar a la comunidad de Ostonial. Con este proyecto, se les permite a los habitantes recolectar y vender un porcentaje de huevos, de cada ambada.
El pueblo de Nosara como a 15 minutos de playa Ostional, cuenta con un aeropuerto que facilita el acceso a esta playa. ubicado en la costa oeste de la Península de Nicoya y tiene una de las playas mas bellas en la Costa Dorada de Guanacaste. Usualmente conocido por ser la puerta de entrada al Refugio de Vida Salvaje Ostional.
